Politics and Government

Nevada's statehood dates back to the Civil War, and the state, due in part to the seniority of its United States senators, occasionally has had unusual influence. With 86% of Nevada's land managed by the federal government, the federal-state relationships have often been strained. Politics cannot be separated from the economy, and mining, ranching, and gaming have been powerful political forces in Nevada.
